The Papua New Guinean Discovery

Between June 2, 2005 and August 7, 2005 I went to Papua New Guinea with Wycliffe Bible Translators. It was a time when God confirmed that He wants me there for His work. At the time I am a student at Davis College in New York State studying and preparing to go back to PNG full time.

First prayer letter

Volume 1 Issue 1 January 2005

“The greatest missionary is the Bible in the mother tongue. It needs no furlough and is never considered a foreigner” ~ William Cameron Townsend founder of Wycliffe Bible Translation.

Dear Fellow Brothers and Sisters in Christ who were called before the foundation of the world:

For those who do not know me well my name is Corey J. Adams, and I am a sophomore at Davis (formally Practical Bible) College. This summer (2005) from June 2 to August 7 I will be traveling to the island nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Papua New Guinea is the eastern half of a larger island. The western part of the island is called Papua formally known as Irian Jaya, which is part of Indonesia. The capital of Papua New Guinea is the city of Port Moresby, which is also the largest city on the island, and the second is Lae. It is within the boarders of this country that hundreds Bibleless people groups exist.
Hundreds of tribes reside on this island without one verse of Scripture in their Heart Language. PNG is home to 823 languages, and yet there are only 150 New Testaments translations available. There are still 673 tribes needing the New Testament translated into their Mother Tongue! This is only the New Testament remember not the whole Bible of 66 books! The task is the large one at hand, but with God nothing is impossible.
God’s love is not just exclusive to English speakers or Spanish, but to every nation, tribe, and tongue on the face of the globe! I’m reminded the of the words in Revelation 5.9 which says, “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation”(NKJV). Every tribe, tongue, and nation on this earth will have heard the message of Christ, and many will accept the good news of Jesus. The problem is many do not have the good news in their Mother Tongue by which they can accept Christ and grow in His knowledge and understanding. It is one this to accept Christ in a foreign language, but it is quite another to grow reading a foreign Bible.
William Cameron Townsend, the founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators, recalled what a Cakchiquel Indian had said to him in Mexico. Mr. Townsend offered him a tract in Spanish to which the native replied, ‘“Do you have one in Cakchiquel?” he asked. There are none, I’m sorry,” replied Cam. “Well,” retorted the man, “if your God is so great, why can’t he speak my language?”’(Benge. Cameron Townsend 57). It was because of this conversation that Mr. Townsend began his quest to translate the Scriptures into the Heart Language of the people he worked with. This is the goal that God has set before me as well.
I have felt the call of the Lord to go to PNG and work in the tribes learning their Mother Tongue and then translating the Bible into that language. This summer will be a great opportunity for me to look into the work that God has laid before me with new eyes. I will be able to have a glimpse in the world of Bibleless people.
Here in America we are very blessed with several Bible Translations from the King James and New International to New American Standard and New Living. The bread of life is so freely given to us, should not we share that bread with the rest of the world?
This summer is going to an adventure for me to see the path that God has put before me. No matter what the trial or tribulation I want to put my trust in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The road ahead may be hard, but I will choose God’s way for it is the best. This summer I pray God will work in my heart and life and show me people that He loves just as much as He loves me. Remember that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3.16 NKJV). The world is every people group on the planet including PNG.
I ask that as I prepare for this wonderful ministry experience that you will join me in prayer. Prayer is a powerful tool as Wesley L. Duewel once said, “Prayer has mighty power to move mountains because the Holy Spirit is ready both to encourage our praying and to remove the mountains hindering us. Prayer has the power to change mountains into highways.” This is a huge task before me and Satan would love that I should not go so I ask that you would pray that I stay focused on God from now all the way through the end of the trip. I want to serve my Lord with all my heart and soul.
I also ask that if the Lord speaks to your heart to give toward my trip that you would respond as well. I will be honest it is a large mountain cost, but God is faithful. The cost of the trip is $4000, but I know God will make a way for me to pay for the trip. Jesus paid His taxes with a coin from a fish so I know that He can pay for my trip to PNG.
I want to thank everyone who has read this prayer letter. I will be sending out other letters in the next few weeks. I will also be sending out email updates to those who send an email expressing interest in email updates. I pray that Christ bestows His blessings on everyone. Thank you and God Bless.

In Christ’s love,

Corey J. Adams
