It is hard to believe that it has been 5 year since I boarded my first airplane in Rochester, NY. It was early in the morning of June 2, 2005. The flights went from Rochester -->Philadelphia--->LAX-->Auckland, NZ--->Brisbane, Australia--->Port Moresby, PNG-->Madang, PNG. We arrived in Madang at dusk on June 4th (since we missed June 3rd). It is hard to believe how fast time flies.

Greetings out there in cyberspace. It has been sometime since I have posted on here...way back in December and now it is almost March. I have been working at Davis College, my Alma Mater in Computer Services since December and now I am involved on the marketing team at the college. I have been keeping busy with this full time work. Lord willing it will help pay down my school loans so I can go on Pre-Field in a few years and get back to PNG. I have been continuing with my lessons in Philippians. This coming Sunday I hope to finish chapter 2. It has been a great study for me and for the class. Well that is just a brief snap shot of what I have been doing. God Bless.

I have been teaching the Adult Sunday School class once again at West Corners. I did a two week study on "When God Gets Mad: Understanding God's full character." It was good to look at what most people fail to realize about God's character; the He is a God of mercy and grace, but also a holy God that turns away from sin and punishes it. Now I have been doing the Book of Philippians. I have been doing it for several weeks now. We did Philippians 2.1-2 today. We only had 45 minutes for Sunday School as many people couldn't make it to church with all the snow on the ground. About 4 inches fell in the early morning of Sunday. I have learned a lot going through Philippians. Depending on the week we get 5-7 verses done at a time. I like to get into the Greek and into Commentaries and just read it over and over again to let the Holy Spirit work. Some verses that stood out to me were Philippians 1.27-30:

27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God. 29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 30 having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me. (NKJV)

They stood out for several different reasons. Verse 28 shows a mark for believers. The persecution and trials from our enemies is a mark of the truth of salvation. It might not see that way in the midst of it, but Paul is writing from experience. He at the time of writing is under House arrest in Rome. The fact that God is allowing Satan to do these things is proof of hell and proof our salvation.

The second thing that stands out is in the next verse. Not only has it been granted to us (believers) to believe in Christ, but to suffer for His sake. It might not be the warm fuzzy, but the Christian life is not all about warm fuzzy feelings. If you want warm fuzzy get a blanket. The life of believer in Christ is that of a spiritual war that is going on. A war in America against apathy, false prophets, and churches that don't preach the true and only ONE Gospel: That Jesus Christ IS the ONLY WAY, the ONLY TRUTH, the ONLY LIFE!!! It is by His Blood we are made new.

Going through Philippians has opened my eyes to things I have never seen and I thank God for the Holy Spirit to guide me in the WORD.

Journey to Papua New Guinea
July 18, 2007

Greeting to all from PNG,

So much has happened in the last 16 days. It feels like
I've been here much longer than that. On Monday July 2nd I
made it to Los Angelos with no problems. There I met
almost all of my teammates. Tuesday the 3rd we had
orientation and then went to the beach. Afterwards we
started our nearly two day journey to PNG. We flew out at
1 am on the 4th and arrived in Goroka at 10:35 am on the
6th. Overall we had a good flight. We had a long layover
in Singapore and were able to take a tour of the city. It
was a good time.

Finally we arrived in PNG. We had a 45 minute drive to the
interface campus. I was so tired I don't remember much of
that day. Saturday the 7th we started classes. So far in
classes we have studied phonetics, culture and language
accquisition and the chronological approach to evangelism.
We've been reading a book called A Stranger on the Road to
Emmaus. It's been a good study. In order to simulate
learning language in a tribal setting, we are learning Tok
Pisin from language helpers. I'm struggling a little bit
in this area, though my Tok Pisin is improving. These past
two or three days I've learned a lot of Tok Pisin.

In the afternoons, I've had opportunity to either visit
with the Bena people in the villages or here on campus.
One village is next door. Two others are within a ten
minute walk. I cannot communicate well with the people
because I know little pidgin (Tok Pisin), but the more
time I spend with them the more I connect.

The Bena people are a lost group. Syncretism has seeped
into all the churches here. New Tribes has missionaries
working with this group but they are all on furlough. One
family, the Fosters, are waiting to return to the Bena.
They are currently waiting in Austrailia for their visas
to go through.

Please pray that;
    1. The Fosters visas come through so they can     
        resume teaching with the Bena people
    2. I am able to learn the language so that I can talk
       with the people
    3. I stay healthy and the rest of my team stays
       healthy. Last week we had a flu go through the
       campus. This week our director has strep throat
    4. I and my team are able to adjust to this new
culture

Tomorrow (July 2nd) Kim leaves from Rochester airport to Cleavland, Ohio (for a brief layover) before heading to LAX. After a day in LA her team leaves for Singapore (a 19 1/2 hour trip) mine was only 12 1/2 hours from LAX to Auckland, New Zealand. They will have a 5 hour layover in Singapore before leaving for PNG. She will arrive in Goroka at around 8:30 PM (our time EST) on Thursday, July 5, 2007...it will be 10:30 in the morning in PNG on Friday, July 6, 2007. Note the clock on the side of my blog. Keep her in prayer as this is the first time flying overseas. Pray for her ministry in the country of PNG and that God would use her and keep her safe and free of Malaria...:) It is not a fun disease as I know. Bon Voyage Kim and God speed

Journey to Papua New Guinea

June 19, 2007

Greeting to my Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank you all for your prayers. It has been a while since I have updated most of you and I apologize for my lack of communication. This past two months has been a trial of my patience, but God is good and saw me through it.

In the month of May, God brought all but $400 of my support in. During this month He also taught me how to wait and trust in Him. For a few weeks preparation for my trip seemed to be at a stand still. No funds were coming in and my passport was not even close to being on its way. My tickets to LA were bought in April, but no other progress seemed to be made. I finished up the semester and headed home, where I continued to wait.

Then May turned into June and I still had no passport. I was however able to speak at a two churches, Harvest Field Baptist in Fayette, NY and Grace Baptist in Marion, NY. Thank you to both churches for having me.

Many of you have been praying for my passport to come. I am happy to report that it is finally here. God is in control and He works in His time, not ours. I still lack $300 for my trip, but I am confident that God will supply. After all He has brought in $4100 so far. I am starting to get excited for my trip now that everything is falling into place.

Please continue to pray for me as I continue to get ready for my trip. I leave for L.A. on July 2nd and for PNG July 4th. I am a little nervous about flying for so long, but I know God will keep me safe.

A few prayer requests are

1. That I will continue to trust God

2. That the rest of my funds come in soon

3. For my teammates as they continue to prepare for their trips.

I'm graduated! Saturday I graduated from Davis College. Four years have gone by fast! Now it is the prep time before I go back to PNG. Keep me in prayer as I look for a job and an apartment for the time being.

To My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21. I echo Paul's praise as I look back to the events of the past month.

March has been an exciting leg on my journey to Papua New Guinea. God provided the $2,220 for the first due date of April 1st. Not only did he provide he did it within two days. Thank you to all who have supported me in prayer and through gifts.

God also allowed me to speak at three churches this past month. On March 18, I spoke at West Corners Baptist Church in Endicott NY. On April 1st, I spoke at Scipio Baptist Church in the afternoon, and at Faith Baptist Church of Farmington in the evening.

It was good to share how God is working in my life, and what my trip will be like.

I look forward to what God will do in this upcoming month. I am confident that He will continue to provide for all my needs.

Some of my prayer request for this month are:

1. That God will cut red tape and allow my passport application to be processed soon and quickly. It is currently taking up to ten weeks. I need mine sooner so that New Tribes can apply for my visa.

2. That I will continue to trust God to provide all my needs and keep my focus on Him

3. That God will give me strength to finish up this semester at school

4. For my teammates as they prepare for their trip

Lots of new NEWS

Greetings in the wonderful name of the resurrected Christ. It has been a while since I have updated this blog. I have been quite busy since the last time. Kim spoke at my home church on Palm Sunday sharing about what she will be doing in PNG. I was home for Spring Break and had a good Easter. Now I am back at College getting ready to finish up...hopefully. Today (Monday April 16) is a snow day on Davis College campus with over a foot of snow. Very weird for April. Keep me in your prayers that I will finish strong.

The Andersons are back in the States

Dear Friends and Family,

We have arrived back in Spokane after a long trip from Papua New Guinea. Here is a summary of our stops the last few weeks.

February 9: Said goodbye to Fukutao village. Lots of tears but happy that the Folopa New Testament is in the hands of the people at last!

February 28: Said goodbye to friends at Ukarumpa, SIL's main center in Papua New Guinea and home to the Andersons for almost 35 years to the day. (We arrived in PNG on March 5, 1972)

March 1: We were presented with the Logohu National Medal by the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea in a ceremony at Government House in Port Moresby. A great way to end our 35 years in PNG!

March 4: Said goodbye to over one hundred Folopas gathered in the capital city, Port Moresby, to again dedicate the New Testament to their use. Almost half the crowd was from the second largest village in the language area and many New Testaments were bought by them.

March 7: Said goodbye to Papua New Guinea and flew to Brisbane, Australia.

March 8: Said goodbye to friends David and Nancy Earley and left for Japan

March 11: Presented the Folopa New Testament dedication video to a crowd gathered to celebrate the translation of "In Search of the Source" into the Japanese language. Neil spoke and was interpreted by the Japanese Pacific Area Director for Wycliffe, Takashi Fukuda. Had a great time eating real Japanese food and visiting the museum of history for the Tokyo area.

March 12: Said goodbye to Japan and arrived in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. We were greeted by Wendy and Stu Talene who now live in Lyndon, WA again. Stayed overnight before driving to Spokane on March 13.

Now that we are in Spokane we are making plans for the next step of our move to the area close to the Canada Institute of Linguistics in Langley, B.C. Canada. Neil has hernia surgery scheduled for March 27 (Wendy's birthday as well) so we are planning to go back to Langley and begin house hunting and be back in Spokane before the surgery.

Kim is going to PNG this summer with New Tribes

My friend Kim (who is below in the NYC picture and also in the picture above that will be on her prayer card). Kim is also going into Bible Translation and this will be her first time overseas as my trip to PNG in 2005 was my first time. The following below is her first prayer letter

To Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

My name is Kimberly Phillips. In the year 2000, God called me to missions, specifically into the field of Bible translation. These past seven years have been a journey in which God has leads me to finish high school, go into the workforce, attend a year at the Word of Life Bible Institute, and eventually continue my studies at Davis College (formerly Practical Bible College). I am currently a junior at Davis, where God has taught me a lot about following and trusting Him.
As I continue to follow, God continues to lead me. Now I believe He is leading me this summer to go on a short term missions trip to Papua New Guinea, with New Tribes Missions. New Tribes Missions is a tribal church planting mission organization working in countries all over the world. When I go from July 2 - August 10, I will be part of a team that will learn vital mission skills, such as cross-cultural communications and evangelism, all while interacting with the surrounding tribes. Though this trip is not focused on Bible translation, I am confident that God has much to teach me while I'm there and as I prepare to go. I know that as I continue on this journey that I must trust God for all my spiritual, physical and financial needs.
Papua New Guinea is literally on the other side of the world. It is an island country just north of Australia. Consequently, this trip is more on the expensive side with a cost of $ 4440. This does not include my flight to Los Angeles and back. I know that as God leads, He provides. I am asking you to prayerfully consider being a partner in my journey through prayer, and if God leads you, through gifts.

Some prayer requests for this month are:
1. That I will continue to trust God to meet my needs
2. That my passport application goes through without problems
3. That I will be able to raise half my support by April 1st
4. That I keep my focus on God

23rd Birthday in NYC

Today for my 23rd Birthday I went down to NYC with the school. It was cool that the school had a trip for the same day as my birthday. I was born on my mom's 27th birthday so we share the same b-day. Last night her siblings threw her a surprise party and Kim and I came up and made it a real surprise. After coming back from home it was a brief sleep before leaving for New York a little after 7 AM. The day went well. We were dropped off at Radio City Music Hall then we (Kim, Lexie, and myself) went to Central Park and then to the New York Historical Society. There was a lot of neat pieces of history in that museum, and you know I love History. We had a picnic in Central Park (and the sun was out!) very cool. We spent a great amount of time in the park. We went through Time Square and to the M&M World and the Hershey store. We also went to Bryant Park, Grand Central Station and past the Chrystal building. We went to Rockefeller Plaza where NBC is. We learned that their building has an observation deck on the top (70th floor) and we had some time so we bought tickets and went to the top. The picture above is of Kim and I on the top with the Empire State Building in the back. It was a great day. Wonderful Birthday!

Email from Neil and Carol as they leave PNG

I received this email from Neil and Carol today tell the good news and the bad news from the field. I found out that Pastor Paul's Father passed away after the dedication of the Folopa NT. So keep Pastor Paul in your prayers. I praise God that he was able to see the NT completed and dedicated. It has been 35 years since Neil and Carol went to PNG and now they are heading back to the States. Neil has some health problems as you will read below. So keep them in your prayers.

Dear Friends and Family,

Today we are leaving Ukarumpa and it is a sad day in many ways. We have been in and out of this place for just a few days short of 35 years. We left Spokane on March 1,1972 and arrive at Ukarumpa on March 10. A lot has happened in 35 years and we praise the Lord for his faithfulness and goodness to us in all those years.

As most of you know we dedicated the New Testament on January 16. It was a wonderful time of celebration despite rain that we were hoping would not come. But that didn't seem to dampen the spirits at all and we think everyone enjoyed the time. We had a lot of visitors come from Ukarumpa and beyond which made it even more special. God was good and all the flights made it in and out despite rain and clouds at various times.

After the dedication Pastor Paul Hon's father passed away suddenly and we were very grateful he didn't die before or during the dedication as everything stopped for weeks because of the death. He was old and sick but he did come to the dedication and my last memory of him was his shaking hands with all the visitors and smiling.

Pastor Paul was a dutiful son and mourned for several weeks. This meant that there was not much could happen in our last weeks there. We had hoped to have a course on using the scripture but that did not happen. And then to make matters worse our printer died the day after the dedication. That would have meant that if we had the course we couldn't have printed the materials for it.

Our leaving the village was painful but good. The leadership all knew it was time for them to take over and be the ones to encourage the use of the New Testament now. Neil hopes to make a trip to PNG next year some time to see how they are doing and hopefully have some kind of course. They really like to have courses out there as it provides a time of sharing and fellowship as well as just learning new things.

This morning we will be saying good bye to our SIL friends that we have known for many years and there will be tears shed. We may or may not be back here and many of these people we will never see again this side of heaven. The SIL members here have a huge challenge ahead of them as life in PNG gets more and more difficult.

Tomorrow, 1 March, we will be receiving the Logohu National Medal of Honor in Port Moresby and that will be a very special way to end our time in PNG. We also hope to sell some New Testaments to Folopas who live in there.

Then we fly to Brisbane for an overnight, then to Japan for a speaking engagement. The book 'In Search of the Source' has been published in Japanese and Neil will speak at the dedication service for it in Tokyo.

We arrive back in Vancouver, B.C. late on March 12 and then plans get a little fuzzy. Neil will have to have surgery for a hernia that has been slowly getting worse over the last months and we don't know the date for that yet. We will be in Spokane to see the doctor on March 14 staying at our house on Howard St.

Thank you to the many of you who have prayed for us during this stay in PNG and over the years. It was been wonderful to be involved with the Folopa people and to see that they now have the New Testament in their language.

An Amazing Film does not begin to describe it

Tonight Kim and I went and saw "AMAZING GRACE" and boy amazing does not begin to describe how wonderful the film was done. It is the true story about William Wilburforce who worked to get slavery abolished in the British Empire. His mentor was John Newton who wrote the song Amazing Grace that we know and love. I won't spoil the film, but it is a MUST SEE. John Newton was talking to William and he is talking about his days of slave trading he tells him, "Although my memory is fading, I remember two things very clearly: I'm a great sinner, and Christ is a great Savior." There were Amens throughout the theater. Go see it! You will learn some history and be challenged by the message.

Winter Break and Sermon at the Auburn Nursing Home

Well I went home for a short winter break. During that time I was able to "relax." I was also able to speak at the Auburn Nursing home and deliver God's word. I spoke about being used of God at any age. I used Abraham and Sarah and how they were 75 and 65 when God called them out of their comfort zone. I also used Daniel and the fact he was taken away from Israel at around 15 years of age and when he was 85 was about the time he was thrown in the den of Lions. I changed them with Timothy's family and the fact that they could as Christians pray for the children and teens today and be a Lois for the next Timothy. It went well I know God spoke. Now it is back to school work tomorrow. Well have a good night.

200th post on The Papua New Guinean Discovery!

This is the 200th post of this blog. This blog has come along way since February of 2005. I have been through a lot since that first post (my newsletter for January 2005), it was my first newsletter for my trip to PNG in Summer 2005. Through this blog I have posted news about preparing for the trip and how God provided for my trip. Through this blog I have posted news from PNG. The years have gone by fast and now I am in my Senior Year at Davis College. It has been along way from preparing for PNG during my Sophomore year in college. I am still preparing to go to PNG and home to be back by 2012 or 2013 after paying off school loans and doing pre-field. Also I will be going to Language school in the near future to acquire more linguist skills. It has been a long road since 2005 and now it is 2 years later. Thanks be to God who always leads us in Triumph in Christ! Here is to the next 200 posts Lord willing as I prepare to go back to PNG full time!

This is the Haus Lutu (House of Worship in Tok Pisin) for the Folopa Village. You can see the outside in the post here. The men would be on the Right side of the floor and the women on the left side. Children would be mothers until around 6 and then the male children could be over on the right side of the church. One thing that is interesting to note is that the tithes and offerings are food. They pass a plate around, but most people bring food from the garden that way Pastor Paul does not have garden as much as he is preparing for the next week's sermon. The Old Testament coming to life.

Here is a beautiful view looking off the end of the airstrip in at the base of Mount Tawua. This is the airstrip that our team landed on when coming into Folopa. I still remember landing on that airstrip on July 1, 2005. We did not know a word of the Folopa language and it was kinda weird not knowing what they were saying. It is interesting looking back at some of these pictures even at the ones I did not take or take part in. This picture is when Brendon and Sara went hiking with some Folopa people. I did not go because they thought I would "pun don" or fall down. One thing I did learn hiking in the Folopa region...take your shoes off and you do not fall down as easily. Take the worm medicine and walk bear foot.

It is great to know that the Folopa New Testament is FINISHED. Not only is the language very different from English; the whole Syntax of a sentence is different. The way words sound and are pronounced are different being a tonal language. The word 'ne' in Folopa has three different meanings depending on the way it is pronounced. I remember two of them. With a slightly higher inflection of the voice it means "sister" yet with a slightly lower inflection it means "ground." Yet there is another way of saying it and it creates a different word. The following above is John 3.16 and it was one the verses in the booklets we created in July 2005 to prep for the Folopa NT that was finished and dedicated less than 2 weeks ago. PRAISE THE LORD!

Thinking about the NT dedication makes me think back to July of 2005 when we dedicated the small booklet in the Bible House. It was such a time of celebration in that small one room. Bruce Smith, the president of Wycliffe Associates, went to PNG for the dedication of the Folopa NT. Reading his report on the Wycliffe Associates blog took me back to Folopa. He wrote, "We were encouraged to find that our mountain destination at Mt. Tawa was clear enough to land. The airstrip is located on a steep slope near the mountain peak (it took 9 years for the local community to build this airstrip) but, again, our pilot made the landing seem very routine. As we taxied to the parking area at the top end of the airstrip there were hundreds of Folopa people waiting to welcome us. The celebration was already in full swing" Bruce stayed in the Men's house and his wife stayed with Neil and Carol Anderson in their house that Brendon, Courtney, Sara, and myself stayed in. He talked about Pastor Paul and Oliver and the village being so excited with the dedication. Read the full post on the blog here. Folopa NT dedication in a few hours

In a few hours it will be Tuesday in Papua New Guinea and it will be time for the Folopa New Testament to be dedicated. It is hard to believe that it has been over a year since I was there. I had a great time in Folopa and now the New Testament is finished and ready to be dedicated by the church there next to Neil's house. Oh, it must be hard for Pastor Paul to sleep tonight with the excitement building all around. If I hear more reports about the dedication I will post them. Greeting everyone on the web. Yes, I am still here breathing and learning to grow in Christ. I had a great Christmas...as mild as it was in New York. I am back at Davis preparing for the new semester. Today I just finished up Principles and Practices of Missions. It was a great winter module. It was taught by Don Trott from ABWE and it was very informative and more importantly it was practical. I look forward to my final semester here at Davis...as a student as I prepare for ministry in PNG in the future.

On Friday (October 20) I had a great meeting with PBTS Alumni. I met with Don Hall (class of 1950) and his uncle Carl Wheeler (class of 1934). I posted a picture on my Davis College History blog here. On Saturday Kim and I went back to her home and went to a wedding at her home church. It was a great time! On Sunday we came back to college and stopped at my house and said hi to my parents. It was a great weekend!!

I just returned from Fall Break. It was great time at home to spend with mom and dad. I had to have some blood work done to check and make sure no malaria was in my system and that my liver was doing well since getting malaria over a year ago. A good report I got back. PRAISE THE LORD! Now I am back in the swing of things here on campus. I have been doing much more research and interviews with Alumni. Check out my Davis College History blog and read more about that. School is going well. Being an RA is great, but can be a trial. But as we were talking about in General Epistles, "Count it all joy when you full into trials..." From James 1.2. Well I guess that will be enough for all. Keep me in your prayers.

The Homecoming this year was wonderful. So many pastors and so many Alumni.

A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITIES:

THURSDAY

At 10:30 AM on Thursday Dr. William Brown spoke on the Post-modern culture to the audience of 170 pastors and church workers + Faculty, Staff, and Students. He talked about how Media now controls a lot of culture and my generation is very influenced by it. Which I totally agree. He talked about how to find truth (GOD's TRUTH) in many areas and use them for the glory of God. Just as Paul when in Athens didn't quote the Torah...he used a poem about Zeus and turned into something to glorify God. We as believers can do the same.

At 11:30 AM for the second session he talked more along these lines and talked about worldviews and how to tell them apart. It was also a challenging time. How to engage the culture we are in for the Glory of God and to bring others to Christ.

After lunch we had one final session with Dr. Brown and it was a time of questions after some clearification on some things. The church in a Postmodern era.

All sessions had the wonderful music of Bob Thompson. He has a wonderful voice from God and a great message with his music.

The night session at 7 PM was with Dr. Ron Hawkins from the class of 1963. He talked about how he was nothing and then he came to this school and the wonderful teachers that trained him. He challenged us with the life of Solomon.

FRIDAY

9 AM Dr. Hawkins continued his message on Solomon and how we are all sinners and we are not in Heaven yet so none of us are more righteous than the next Christian.

At 10:30 AM Dr. Miller gave another great message. He used a few things from the history of the school to do a sermon on VISION. Where there is no Vision the people the people perish. He used bits and pieces from Dr. John A. Davis' writing about the Education the Educates. You can read the whole thing here.

The afternoon after a wonderful meal I spent the time with the Class of 1956 and you can see their picture here. I was blessed and believe they were also.

First Day of Homecoming at Davis College

Today was Homecoming and it was a very busy day. I had a good night's rest. After a breakfast I went to the Gym and made sure the computer and projector was set-up. The rented projector was worse than the one we have here, so I used ours. It was great to see the Pastors and workers come. There were over 170 in attendance. Great message by Dr. William Brown President of Cedarville College. The remote didn't work for the first session, but I was able to help out and the rest of the presentations went well. The Alumni came in and it was a good time. Lots of people from the class of 1956 and I talked with the Blackley's from NJ. Mrs. Blackley graduated from the class of 1939 and there was a lady from the class of 1937. Next week I have an interview with an Alumni that graduated from 1932. Tomorrow it should be great. I am looking forward to the Class Reunion of 1956. More later.

Tomorrow (Thursday) kicks off Homecoming Weekend...or end of the week, since it ends Friday night. I have been getting things ready for 1956 Golden Anniversary. I will have to write more after the reunion on Friday. I have had some fun putting it together. I am working PowerPoing tomorrow and Friday so I hope I can enjoy the Leadership Forum as well. The Gym looks nice and set up. It is going to be a good time. Next week I have a phone interview with an Alumni from 1932. I have to talk the older Alumni before they go to Glory. I am trying to see what the Campus was like in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Well I will write more if I am not too busy writing my Seavey paper for Intertestamental History for Monday.

Clarks on Furlough

I received an email from the Clark Family today. Chris Clark is a pilot with SIL in PNG who I have had contact with before my trip in 2005. They had some problems with their old computer. Chris wrote: "We would appreciate prayers for good attitudes and wisdom to solve computer problems we're dealing with while preparing for three presentations this week. We had to buy a new computer to replace our old one that fried on us 1 month before we left on furlough." So keep their family as they are here in the States until Spring in your prayers.

Well it is the end of another busy week here at Davis College. Last week I forgot to post that I had a great conversation that lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes with Pastor Carl Wheeler. Pastor Wheeler is a graduate of PBTS in 1934. It was great to hear about the days past here on this very campus. Great brother in Christ to know. He sounds like he is in his 60s or 70s with much youth still in his voice.
Here at Davis I have been taking some great classes that have been very challenging yet enlightening. I have been also getting some things ready for Homecoming. It is good. Dr. Snyder is at my home church, Scipio Baptist going through the whole Old Testament. I think they will get much out of his teaching. Well have a great weekend. God Bless.

Education that Educates

The founder of our school John A. Davis knew how to speak plaining. Even reading this little booklet I found about education his words still speak. I typed it up because people need to hear what he said. I am guess it was written in 1933. The back of the booklet talks about Hitler and John A. Davis died in the early part of 1934 so I am guess late 1933 this was written or maybe earlier and this is an updated version. Not sure, but enjoy:

Education That Educates

By Dr. John A. Davis

The right kind of an education may be likened to a new automobile. It may cost the owner much, but he knows that it is clean, up-to-date, tested, and tried; one in which he may travel with ease, safety and success. A poor education may be compared with a second-handed car that costs less; one which has been neglected, has poor tires, and is liable to break down when you need it most. Of course, the owner of either car may have a wreck if not careful.

It is one thing to possess an education and it is another thing to be truly educated. It is one thing to be educated and another thing to obtain the right kind of education. There is such a thing as an educated fool; I have seen the species! There is a kind of education that makes a life glow and sparkle with joy, success and service. There is another kind of education that produces a narrow, morbid, selfish, miserable, conceited standard of living. One may have a head full of facts and yet not know how to live.

You may have what some call the best equipment—degrees, diplomas, honors and head-knowledge. It may take years of efforts to obtain these qualifications and yet your life may be on the wrong road; your energies may be invested wrong. I know of some people who have spent years in schools, colleges, and universities, who are called educated but they are not practical or in any way useful. They possess no originality of thought, know nothing of the spiritual realities of life, are obsessed with a selfish mental outlook. And when their pilgrimage on this earth will have ended and the balance sheet is struck, it will be found that they made no contribution to the world in which they lived; they did not properly use the brain, heart and mind which the Maker had loaned them. Can it be said that they were truly educated?

For more than thirty years I have tried to impress the students attending my school that there is a difference between mere theoretical training and true, PRACTICAL education.

First: The best education starts where the Bible begins: “In the beginning God.” The first great fact to grip is the reality of God. There is no other safe foundation upon which to build a philosophy of life. We hear a great about “higher education.” Define your term! If by higher education you mean a system of thought that takes the student away from God and starts him out upon the sea of life without a chart, I repeat Paul’s words, “The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” The higher a nation goes that kind of education, the lower it will sink. Before the War Germany gave us an example of that sort of thing; it blossomed in Nietzche and its ripened fruit was the World War...

It is not enough to know about God or study about Him, but to believe that He is the Personal Father of everyone who believes on His Son as the Saviour. This loving Father makes know His will, enlightens our understanding, and moulds the life that is given over to Him...This is the first step toward a real education.

Second: The student must know “the Wonder Book of the Ages.” The greatest Book in the world! When “The Student League of Many Nations” of the Practical Bible Training School was in Washington, the group visited the Congressional Library and learned that it contained three million books. One of our students calculated that if he was to read continually for a thousand years he could not finish the reading of all these books. Yet, there is but one Book that can truthfully called “THE BOOK.” This Book contains the only true explanation of origins, the purpose of life, and the final goal. It reveals the plan of salvation and the hope of eternal glory through Jesus Christ...God has given us two Words: “the Incarnate Word” and the “the Written Word.” John says that “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” In true education, the Written Word also becomes flesh in our lives. We should not only be able to quote the Bible from memory, but get it into our hearts through Christian experience as God’s eternal truth built into mind, soul, brain life and character. II Timothy 2.15 is then the next step in building a victorious personality.

Third: We should know ourselves. “Know thyself.” While we study books, we should also study ourselves—our faults and weaknesses, as well as, our virtues and good qualities. You can count yourself richer the day you find a new fault in yourself. To be at our best, we should study our parents, back two or three generations, to know what we have inherited, and resolve by the Grace of God to overcome our inherited weaknesses, natural limitations and faults, by using every obstacle as a stepping stone to something better. God has a perfect plan for every life and by knowing one’s self, one can better cooperate with the Holy Spirit in finding adjustment to that plan.

Fourth: We should study to know others and by seeing weak and strong traits of character in them, it will aid us to overcome our own weaknesses. The man at your side is an open book which you will do well to try to read. We should not study others from the standpoint of being critical; let us always strive to be constructive in all that we say and do. It is well to seek the presence and fellowship of those who are able to bring things to pass, in order that we may profit from their successes. Seek your neighbor’s good, not his goods. How many times a clean, noble, unselfish life has inspired others, particularly young men and women to higher and better achievement!

Fifth: No man’s education is complete, whether he is training for the pulpit, the farm or the professions, unless he acquires at least a general knowledge of the scientific principles of modern business methods. The fundamental of modern business is Salesmanship. We are all in the selling business. This does not mean that our wares are always sold in terms of so many dollars and cents. Paul was a master salesman. He sold the Gospel to the Gentiles. This is to say, he knew the underlying principles of exchange; he knew the underlying principles of exchange; he knew how to invest his efforts in a manner to awaken desire for what he had to offer. Since the true measure of success in life can be computed only in terms of service rendered, then it behooves us to be qualified to invest of our talents in the widest sphere possible and to do this we must know how to sell our goods. Russell H. Conwell’s famous lecture “Acres of Diamond” was nothing more than a statement that there are great opportunities at your finger-tips if you are trained in the business of knowing how to cash in on them.

These are a few of the practical things which are essential to true education and I have sought to outline them in a simple conversational way with the hope that they will be helpful to some young life in getting a solid foundation upon which to stand in this day of opportunity, a time which is also cursed by ever increasing temptations.

On our beautiful campus here at Bible School Park, New York, we have a building called “King Hall.” It is named after my friend, the late Byron W. King, the noted Lecturer and Teacher. I have heard him stand before audiences and vision a creek, river or lake and with eloquent, descriptive powers, picture its possibilities for power, pleasure, and profit. I have listened as he has told about some filthy old swamp in the center of an island. He would visualize it drained, the island made over and changed into a place of beauty with trees, shrubbery, flowers, beautiful homes, gardens and boats for fishing and pleasure. The swamp was converted into a little lake with a shore line and lovely drive. The creek was dammed up to produce electric power to operate factories, mills, light cities, and furnish clothing, furniture, etc. He saw the land cultivated to bring forth food and wealth. Trees were made into chairs, furniture and carvings. In fact, Byron W. King saw possibilities in everything.

Some of us see only hard, cold, everyday facts; we live in a rut, lose hope and have no vision of better things. Others see the world as a work-shop in which wonderful things can be produced. Someone has truthfully said:

Today, (Saturday, September 9, 2006) we had to a project for Cross Cultural Communications involving NO TALKING. It is very weird. No talking. Only writing and typing. Using signs to communicate and writing. It feels like a silent film doing work sometimes. I think it is see how important langauge is and how to use non-verbal communication. We will see on Monday at 7:25 AM.

A new meaning for LABOR DAY

Today (Monday, September 4, 2006) Labor Day Davis College worked with Samaritian's Purse to help people affected by the flood in June. We were tearing up floors and taking it away so that it might be rebuilt and not have mold growing. Some of the insides of the wall were still wet 2 months later. It is amazing to see how a small college like us can have an impact in our community for Jesus Christ. All glory and honor goes and belongs to Him! It was a great day of LABOR.

State Fair and other Jazz

The New York State Fair went well today. Not sure how many people came. I am guessing 80,000 for today. I will have to see what the Post Standard's website says in the morning about total for the day. I have been keeping in touch for about a year or a little longer with Dr. Woodrow Brown who was a teacher at Practical Bible Training school (now Davis College where I go) and I found out that he has wrote a book and had it published. It is on Pleasant Word Bookstore and it is entiled Father's Faith. I think I might get it.

Well the training for us RAs is almost over. Tomorrow we head to the NY State Fair in Syracuse for a day of fun and hopefully sun...Lets pray for that! We had CPR/First Aid training and we believe that this will be a good year. I know their will be temptations and struggles in the dorm. Spiritual Warfare, but God is in control. Keep me and the other RAs and RD in prayer that we can be used of God in these guys lives for His glory and His honor. Because it is all about Christ after all. Well maybe I will have some pics from the Fair tomorrow night.

The 9 guys in the cabin I counseled in got along very well, and they won Honor Cabin for the week because they loved to clean. It was a good week and I am going to miss those guys. Well three weeks are done at camp for the summer. It is hard to believe how fast time goes by. It was once again a great time to talk about PNG with the campers. I love that country and long to go back to it. The wonderful people and the places that I saw. It made me home sick as I looked through the pictures preparing the presentation. Home sick for PNG. The first week of camp

The first week of camp at Cortland Bible Club Camp went very well. It was a small week with only 5 guys and 10 girls. 2 of those girls received Christ as their Lord and Savior. It rained a couple of days, but overall the week went very well. I was the Missionary Speaker for Vespers. The kids seemed to enjoy it.

Well Tomorrow starts a new week and I am looking forward to continue to grew in Christ. I have been memorizing Romans 8 with Kim, and I have memorized about 8 verses of the 39. Still a ways to go, but it is good to get God's word in my mind and heart. In the words of Mr. Seavey: "Have you read the Bible Lately...It's good stuff. Maybe I'll write more next week. God Bless. Today marks the one year anniversary of leaving for PNG. It is hard to believe. As of this time when I am writing I would have been flying over the country for LAX. I believe our flight for PA had taken off around 7:30-8:00. Wow! Time does fly. It was an amazing summer last year.

Dr. and Mrs. Don Hall's Blog

A few days ago I was doing my usual search on Blogger for "Davis College" to see what might be up about the college which I attend. Most times the searches bring up more about UC Davis out in California than our small college in Upstate New York. This time however I found a new blog and upon looking into it I found it was just started by Dr. and Mrs. Don Hall. Dr. Hall is a graduate from PBTS in 1950, and his wife Betty from 1952 I believe. They were missionaries throughout Africa. It is great to read what they have to write about their time in Africa serving God with SIM (Serving in Missions). Dr. Hall also comments on his writing in Touchstone the twice a year publication of Davis College. They just put a picture on their blog also as he says in his own words, "It is not that I'm clever at doing these things, it is that I have clever children who guide me step by step." Well you are doing a great job there Dr. Hall, keep up the good work.

Another thing I enjoy doing is History. I love History. If I wasn't going to be a Bible Translator I would be History Teacher or some other career with history. I enjoy History that affects my life. I have enjoyed working with the History of Davis College, back when it was Practical Bible Training School. I have worked on a Wikipedia article about Davis College. Also one on John A. The Following is Dr. Parker’s prayer of dedication at the destruction of the Old Administration Building Friday, April 28, 2006. I typed this up from the recording I made on the video. Enjoy. We are moving forward at Davis College!

One story about this building. Short one. When I was a student, this is where we paid our bills. [Cheers and Yells] It cost me 15 dollars a week: Room, board and tuition. [Laughs]

All right let’s pray! Gracious God thank You for the beauty of the day. Thank You Father for Your approval upon this project as Dr. Miller has shared with us. And thank You for the support of so many in giving, and developing plans, considering lots of different options, and overall Father just putting together the kind of building that will serve the college well, but ultimately Lord will serve You well, and serve the kingdom extremely well. And so we are grateful for the progress, we are grateful for this day, and we are thankful that You are working, You are blessing, You are leading in the development of this campus. Father we do want to pray for these requests and applications that are before some donors and some foundations. And we pray that You will go before each application and work in the hearts of men and women who make decisions about these matters. And we would ask Lord that they might give their approval for the requests that we might have the funds to complete the projects here on this campus. And so Lord we dedicate this occasion to You. And we just recognize it as a token of Your leading in the campus and of Your work on the campus and an indication of greater things to come. And Lord we look forward to the day when we can stand here and dedicate a brand new building for Your honor and for Your glory to be used in the advancement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. History in the making at Davis College

It has been really cool going to this school in the years I have been here. I came while it was Practical Bible College in the Fall. In March 2004, still my freshman year, the "official" announcement was made about the name change and the new mascot. I had known about the name change since November of 2003. I have seen this college start to grow and the destruction of two buildings preparing the College for the Future. It has been amazing to see this college change. They have been historic days. Below is a picture of the Main Building of Practical Bible Training School around 1922 or so. What is left of this building is rotting away under the parking lot. Cool times we live in.

A Glass of Cold Water

Here is a quote from David Ringer's blog:

The Nama people, of hot southwestern PNG, do not have the Bible in their language. "Having the Bible only in English," said a Nama woman, "is like holding a cold glass of water that we can't drink."

I thought this was quite powerful. Having a Bible in English is like having cold glass of water that you can't drink. Think of having a cold glass of water on a summer day 110 degrees and you can't drink it! That is what it is like for people without a Bible in their heart language. They want to drink of the Living Water, but can't! How many Bibles do you have in your house? How many versions of the Holy Bible do you own? Don't take it for granted. Pray and better yet, put feet on those prayers for the millions without a verse in their heart language.

It was a long day here in Binghamton. It was also the last night of the play. Here we have (left to right) RFK played by Mike Boris and JFK played by Timothy Day looking confussed for the camera. The whole cast did a great job working on the play and it turned out really well. Good job guys. It was a long day and I crashed upon returning to Davis.

"Cold War: Kennedy and Kruschev"

I have had the honor of working with a great bunch of High School Students this semester. They are Homeschoolers in the area that attend Dr. Franz's history class. Each Fall the students learn about an area of History and then in the Spring Dr. Franz has them act in a play that is about that area of History. This year they were talking about the Cold War. It is about more specificly the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was great to get back into Drama. It is something I so miss from my days in High School. Being in 10 plays and then none is kinda sad. Oh well I know the training of being on stage has helped me preach and teach. Great training for both. The Plays (Dramas and Musicals) were: Fiddler on the Roof in 9th grade, Jane Erye, Sugar (based off the Movie "Some Like It Hot"), and A Mid-summer night's dream in 10th. 11th grade I was in: A Haunting we will go (a horror/comedy most have not hear of: I know I didn't), Peter Pan was the musical that year, and we did Get Smart! to close out my junior year, about Maxwell Smart. My Senior Year we did: Pride and Prejudice, Annie as our Musical, and Much Ado about nothing to close my Senior Year.

So what was my favorite part? Well Jane Erye was fun being Mr. Brocklehurst and Rev. Woods. Two very different parts, but both really fun to be. Pride and Prejudice was one of biggest leads, but I had the lead Male role also in A Haunting we will go. Annie I had three very different parts...so I enjoyed all the plays I was in for different reasons. The plays I liked the least and some will hate me for this were the Shakespear Plays (A Mid-summer night's Dream and Much Ado About Nothing). I do not like the long dialogues and monologues. Of Shakespear's dramas I like Julius Caesar and Macbeth the best. Well good night and God Bless from the Eastern United States. Come and see the play tomorrow night if you can. 6 PM. Micheal Flaherty President of Walden Media at Prayer Breakfast in Wichita

Micheal Flaherty the president of Walden Media that last year produced CS Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe spoke at a prayer breakfast in Wichita, Kansas. The born again believer in Jesus Christ rededicated his life to Christ after the events at Columbine in 1999. It was great to hear about a company in Hollywood that has a Born-Again Christian as the President! One that is not afraid to say "I am a Christian." He is not very much in the media eye that much of the time, but when he is it is a testimony to Jesus Christ. You can read the whole story here.

End of the semester with stress and bills

Hi everyone. I am entering the last couple weeks of my junior year of colllege. Lots of homework yet to finish and bills to be paid still. Keep me in prayer as I finish that I will finish strong. I still owe the school over $6000 that I will have to get a loan for! It is a lot of money. The loans seem to pile up, which is not fun since they will all have to be paid back before I go back to PNG full time. I know God could provide me the money since He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. I my parents are going to take out a PLUS loan, but I really don't want to put this on their back. Just keep me in prayer as a war goes on in my mind. God Bless.

2nd Day at ABWE and Post by David Ringer

Hi everyone on the World Wide Web. We had an excellent day at the ABWE Student Missions Forum. We head back to Davis College tomorrow. Many great topics were brought up and many things to meditate on over the next few days and weeks. Also, my friend David Ringer in PNG has a great post about his time in with the Usarufa people who are learning how to read the NTs in their Heart Language. The NTs were dedicated in 1981, but very few know their language and Tok Pisin is starting to reign in the PNG. He talks about raskols in PNG during the post (you'll have to read the post to find out the whole story), but he made a great statement that I believe in fully. He wrote "Those raskols are the reason I am in this country. We are here because we hope that people will read and understand God's Word and that His Spirit will change their hearts. We are here because people need Jesus."
Even if you are not going to PNG, Africa, China or South America, you can share Christ with the people around you. Make a disciple of someone who can make a disciple of someone that way Christ is spread throughout the world. I once heard a statement (not sure who said it) saying, "Each one of us is only 5 people away from each person in the world." Meaning that you know someone who knows someone who knows someone....on and on and on, and by doing so we know the entire world! Have you shared Christ with someone today? Have I? First Day of ABWE Student Missions Forum

Today we had the the first day of ABWE Student Missions Forum in Harrisburg, PA. We had a great time and as I write this I am in the Holiday Inn Room. Dr. Michael Lotis President of ABWE. We had a great meeting of how to impact the world for Jesus Christ for the Glory of God. I am looking forward tomorrow. We played a game going around ABWE. It was fun to run around, and I think I had more energy than last year, because I have lost some weight. Well goodnight from Harrisburg, PA.
